The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) now requires all volunteers, including Amateur Radio operators, to be certified in at least the current versions of IS-100,IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800 course material. For non-governmental employees and others without access to classroom instruction, these courses are available as on-line independent-study courses that are free of charge.

As of late 2011, local agencies are also requiring the following on-line courses before you will be allowed to man a served-agency radio station. All ARES members are encouraged to complete these courses. You will not be able to deploy to a served agency without these courses.

On successful completion of these eight courses, please contact Terry Dillard, ARES Emergency Coordinator for Shelby County at ec at sc-ares dot org. After reviewing your Certificate of Completion for each course, he will arrange to have an ID badge made for you that will allow you access to the radio rooms of our served agencies.
